How to Choose the Right Realtor (Even if It’s Not Me)

Choosing the right realtor is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when buying or selling a home. It’s about more than just putting a sign on the lawn or unlocking a front door. The right realtor should guide you through the process, advocate for your best interests, and make what can feel like a stressful transition a lot smoother.

So how do you know you’ve found the right fit? Here are a few things to look for when you’re interviewing agents:

1. Experience that Matches Your Needs

Not all real estate experiences are the same. Selling a family home in Kanata is different than buying your first condo downtown. Look for someone who has experience with the type of property and neighbourhood you’re focused on. Ask questions like: How many homes have you sold in this area? or Do you work with more buyers or sellers?

2. Communication You Can Count On

Buying or selling a home involves a lot of moving parts. You’ll want someone who keeps you in the loop every step of the way. Pay attention to how quickly they respond to your first call or email — it’s usually a good sign of how things will go once you’re working together.

3. A Strong Local Network

A good realtor brings more than just market knowledge. They should have trusted connections to mortgage brokers, home inspectors, lawyers, and contractors who can make the process easier. That network can save you time, money, and a few headaches along the way.

4. Honesty and Trust

This one’s simple, but important. You should feel comfortable being honest about your goals, your budget, and your concerns — and you should feel the same honesty coming back. A good realtor will tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear.

5. A Personal Fit

At the end of the day, you’ll be spending a lot of time with your realtor. Choose someone you feel comfortable with, who listens to you, and who treats you with respect. This relationship should feel like a partnership, not a transaction.

The truth is, you have a lot of great agents to choose from in Ottawa. The right fit will come down to who you trust to guide you through one of the biggest decisions of your life. Here are some interview questions I’ve packaged for you to ask at realtor interviews. Feel free to ask whichever ones you see fit.

If you’d like to sit down and talk through your options, I’d be happy to meet for a free consultation. No pressure and no obligation. Whether we end up working together or not, I’ll make sure you walk away with a clearer picture of your next step.
